A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

A second-person, casual bullet-hell, resource management stuffing/weight gain game with a linear plot.

This game is played entirely with the Mouse and exited via the Escape key.

It's an experiment in learning Lua programming (if you take a look at the code you'll see what an caveman-level programmer I am) and in a theory I had regarding "player attention and focus as the primary resource in a resource management game".

Be aware that the graphics are about three decades out of date, roughly early/mid-DOS era, and that there is no save system for the game.  A full playthrough takes roughly an hour.

This build, the initial Alpha, is all that remains of the project.  A reminder to regularly back up your work, just in case your computer decides to fry itself overnight and tank your hard drive.  I had aspirations for future improvements, but rather than redo all the work that was lost I'm going to close the book on this entry and focus my creative efforts elsewhere going forward.

Install instructions

For Windows, just extract the files into the same directory and launch the *.exe file.

For Linux, ensure LÖVE is installed on your system via your software manager of choice.  The *.love file should become associated to it if LÖVE is on your system and be directly launchable via double-clicking in your GUI.

I really enjoy the content of the game, but it would be nice if there was a save feature. I got up to a little past the 380 point, and had to quit to do other things and lost all my progress 😭😭. And Idk if I was doing something wrong on my end,  but it took much longer than an hour to get to where I was as the silhouette filled up Very slowly

I agree as to the need for a save scheme. Or at least a code for loading back to a particular 'stage'. This one's mostly 'done' because it's functional and the computer I used to program it with all the associated software and dependencies and so forth is a brick now, more than being 'done' because it's in the final state I wanted it to be at.

That's too slow. Can you keep your stomach nearly topped off? Are you working out at all? It's important to keep your energy up enough to do batches of high-efficiency work so you're not broke all the time, but selecting the 'exercise' type option in this type of game can be counterintuitive.

Sorry for the late reply! I figured out how to get out of the game without closing it, so the lack of a pause isn't as big of an issue.

Besides that, I timed how long it took me to get from the 425-435 point, and it took an hour even while being conservative with exercise and never hitting flu/bills. It seems to me that things start to get really slow like this around the 320 point. I understand you aren't working on the game anymore, but I though you'd like to  know.

the mouse is invisible without any cursor replacement and you're forced into fullscreen mode without any way to get out of it, is there any way to remedy this? i can't really play without some way of knowing where my mouse is...

This is a new one by me - I get my default mouse (as do at least some others, since I've gotten comments about late game play from people who have made it all the way through.)  I guess I'd start troubleshooting by asking for your OS.  Dumb question, but you don't have your mouse pointer set to a flat black icon, do you?

I love the simplicity and nostalgia of it! However, the earning of money from remote work is very, very little compared to how quickly the stomach fullness bar depletes. How is one supposed to earn enough without starving?

There is definitely an overly-narrow sweet spot in regards to income.  It was one of the things I was adjusting before my hard drive bit the dust and I abandoned updating the project.

General consensus from the other people who played it through to the end seems to be : earn a lot early on, then batch work periods just after level transitions when the funds start looking meager.

Oh, and it may not have come through, but the amount you earn doing work is proportional to your current energy levels.  So if you're a couch potato in the moment when you phone in some work, you make essentially nothing, but if you are active enough to have a higher energy level (which reduces food-to-fat efficiency and slows down weight gain) you'll pull in a lot more money.  Trying to play without ever raising your energy above the bottommost baseline is essentially impossible.
